Farm Salon Fellowships
Those who accept the invitation to become farm salon fellows for a weekend accept to share moments of curiosity and reflection in order to gain a reinvigorated perspective on their work and worldview. You are reading this because you have been invited by someone who thinks you can gain from and give to this experience as a first time fellow or because you would like to pursue a deepening of past farm salon experiences as a returning fellow.
Monthly farm salons have been hosted by prime produce and our friends at the MindKind Institute since January 2014. Our hosting team intentionally keeps group size small so conversations and connections happen in a human-sized setting. Participants in this weekend fellowship can reserve one of 10-12 slots by pledging to attend from Friday at 7:30 P.M. to Sunday at 2:00 P.M. Because each attendee counts, and because demand to attend often exceeds the salon's mission-defined capacity, we also ask that participants make a refundable upon attendance financial deposit in order to express meaningful commitment. The deposit can be waived if it prevents anyone from attending. Follow the link below for more information.
Hosts and guests agree to the following principles.
Curiosity: Ask questions. Ask beautiful questions. Ask care-full questions. Take nothing for granted.
Hospitality: We host each other through cultivating not only a hospitality of place, but also a hospitality of mind, and a hospitality of heart.
Presence: Show up. Pause. Breathe. Turn off technology. Turn on the light from the inside out. Welcome to here and now.
Remembrance: Reflect on assumptions that have hardened into world views. Remind your body of its needs.
Friday: please arrange your travel to arrive between 7:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
Saturday: morning meditation :: brunch :: farm work :: fellowship share :: dinner
Sunday: spiritual practice :: brunch :: cleanup :: weekend formally ends at 2:00 P.M.
RITUALS & INVITATIONS
Four main rituals or open invitations ground the weekend. The first is feasting. The second is a shared activity or farm work - something to get our blood pumping! The time of year influences how each weekend fellowship group contributes its energy and time to maintaining a hospitable environment. The third is an optional fellowship share. This gives anyone who would like to workshop or present an idea the opportunity to take advantage of gathered talent and expertise. The fourth is a Sunday spiritual practice. We often join the service hosted by the sisters of the Community of the Holy Spirit who have been partners in this endeavor. During any of the above activities, attending fellows can choose to join the greater group for activities or quietly pursue their own individual practices. The only requirement is for all to be present during meal times.
From New York City, the retreat house is 1hr 30min by train and cab, and 1hr 10min by car. There are multiple trains leaving Grand Central Station between 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. that will arrive between 5:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. at Brewster Train Station on the Southeast line of the Metro North Railroad.
The quickest way to find one that works is to use google.com/maps. Plot 118 Federal Hill road as your destination and click on the public transport icon. Then click on the options // times link to see your options to arrive between 7:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
When you arrive at Brewster Station, take a cab to 118 Federal Hill Rd ($10-12). The ride is 8min.
You will have a bed and possibly your own room. If you are in a couple, you will have your own room, but will possibly have to connect single beds together. Bathrooms will be shared. Kitchen shared. Chores shared. Meals and snacks will be provided and modified to suit any allergies or strong dietary preferences.
